
Kelly Ferguson Scores Twice in UCR's 3-1 Win at San Jose State

San Jose, CA—Freshman Kelly Ferguson scores twice as the UCR women's soccer team beat San Jose State University, 3-1, at Spartan Soccer Field Monday afternoon.
Ferguson was able to notch her first goal of the game in the 66th minute, taking a pass from Kerri Fahres and skipping it past the Spartans (1-5) netminder to give the Highlanders (4-1-1) a 2-0 lead. Ashlee Steven was credited also credited with an assist on the play.
Finding herself in the right spot three minutes later, Ferguson was able to rebound a header shot from Renee Scachetti that deflected off the Spartans' goalkeeper and set up Ferguson for a chip shot to give UCR a 3-0 lead.
"We have been playing well as a team, but today we asked for consistent play from individuals," said coach Veronica O'Brien. "We were able to get that today and it showed."
The Highlanders got on the board in the 30th minute when Vanessa Chanez scored from the left front of the goal on a takeway. UCR was unable to complete the shutout, when SJSU's Molly Flanagan took a shot from the back right that trickled past the Highlanders' goalkeeper.
The Highlanders outshot the Spartans 19-6 and Tawny Poggio earned the win in goal, allowing one goal and making three saves. Erin Lavey allowed three goals and made nine saves.
"Our focus was to do a better job with pressure up top and contain the defense," added O'Brien. "We were had the pressure and didn't let them out of it."
The Highlanders will head to Fresno State and face the Bulldogs on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. and will return home on September 21 against Portland State at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
