UC Riverside 2, Cal Poly 2 (2OT) - Box Score
San Luis Obispo, CA—Senior forward Vanessa Chanez scored with less than a minute remaining in regulation to force overtime as UC Riverside tied 2-2 at Cal Poly Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders maintain their undefeated record in Big West Conference play, improving to 10-3-2, 4-0-1, while the Mustangs put their record at 9-3-4, 1-2-1.
Conference-leading goal scorer senior midfielder Renee Scachetti got the scoring started for the Highlanders in the eighth minute, hitting an undefendable laser beam from 30 yards out that sailed just over goalkeeper Liz Hill's out-streched hand and into the net. It was Scachetti's 12th goal of the season.
Despite being down 1-0, Cal Poly controlled the action for much of the first half, keeping the ball on the Mustang half of the field for a majority of the minutes. Cal Poly scored the equalizer in the 49th minute when Kelsey Carroll found a loose ball created by a Sharon Day shot, five feet in front of the net. Carroll controlled the rebound and got off a shot before UCR junior goal keeper Tawny Poggio could react.
With less then three minutes left in regulation the Mustangs pulled ahead behind a goal from Heidi McQuitty. Day set her up with a cross that McQuitty fired at the net. Poggio was able to get a hand on the shot but was unable to control it as the ball rolled over the goal line.
The Highlanders, in danger of losing their first Big West match of the season, answered in the final minute of regulation play as senior forward Lisa Jensen set senior forward Vanessa Chanez up with a corner kick. Chanez received the ball six feet away, out-jumping the Cal Poly defense, and banging home a header for her fifth goal of the season.
In the overtime periods the defenses took control for both the Mustangs and Highlanders as only three shots were taken between the two teams.
Cal Poly outshot the Highlanders 23-10, with 15 of those shots coming in the second half alone. Poggio was dazzling all afternoon, coming up with a season-high nine saves, and keeping the Highlanders in contention for much of the afternoon. Hill ended the day with four saves.
