Women's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak To Eight With 1-1 Tie vs. UC Irvine

Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside women's soccer team tied UC Irvine 1-1 in double overtime Friday night in a Big West Conference match at Anteater Stadium. The Highlanders stay undefeated in conference play at 4-0-2, 10-3-3 overall, while the Anteaters earn their first point of the year to sit at 4-11-2, 0-4-1.
UCI took the lead in the 29th minute as Megan Ortiz scored her fifth goal of the season off a throw in by Lauren Baer. The Anteaters held the lead until 2:11 remaining in the game, when the Highlanders came back to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Amber Plumlee found herself in the penalty box and squeezed the ball past the keeper with an assist from sophomore Jenna Leonti.
The two teams played a pair of scoreless overtime periods to end in a 1-1 draw. UCR outshot UCI 17-11and 4-2 in extra time, but could not find the net.
UCI keeper Rosie Aguilera had five saves for the Anteaters in 65 minutes of play while keeper Erin Henry had three saves in 45 minutes of action. Highlander junior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio also made five saves.
UCR has won five in a row to climb to the top of the conference standings. At 9-3-1, the Highlanders are one victory away from their fourth consecutive 10-win season. UCR is also 3-0 in conference play for the first time in the program’s five year existence. This week, the Highlanders travel up the Central Coast, playing at UC Santa Barbara on Friday and at Cal Poly on Sunday.
