UC Riverside 0, Long Beach State 0 (2OT) - Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside completed an undefeated conference season, tying Long Beach State 0-0 in double overtime in the Highlanders’ Big West finale in front of 454 fans Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The Highlanders move their record to 10-3-3, 4-0-3 while the 49ers clinch a berth in the conference tournament at 12-4-2, 3-2-1.
In a game with considerable tournament implications for both sides, the teams went toe-to-toe for 110 minutes. Both teams were fairly even across the board. UCR took 13 shots to LBSU’s 12, had eight fouls to the 49ers’ six, and the teams were level on three corner kicks apiece. Solid defense and outstanding play from both goalkeepers kept the scoreline at zero.
Each side had its share of opportunities to break the deadlock. In the 40th minute, UCR junior forward Kelly Ferguson rifled a shot from 20 yards that 49er goalie Liz Ramos tipped onto the crossbar. Later in the half, sophomore forward Jenna Leonti had a long throw-in land at her feet but her point-blank shot was stopped by Ramos.
At the other end, UCR junior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio was equally impenetrable, tying her season-high with nine saves, including one in each overtime period.
With three straight ties to finish the regular season schedule, the Highlanders can finish no worse than second place in the Big West standings, the program’s highest-ever finish in their five-year existence. The Highlanders now wait to see their seeding for the conference tournament, which depends on Cal State Fullerton’s results later Friday against UC Irvine and Sunday against Long Beach State.
Before the match, UCR honored its six graduating seniors: Dani Geiger, Lindsay Hellman, Lisa Jensen, Angela Reling, and Renee Scachetti.
