UC Riverside 1, Cal State Northridge 0 - Box Score
Riverside, CA—Senior midfielder Renee Scachetti scored her second game-winning goal in as many games to lead UC Riverside to a 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference match Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The win was the Highlanders’ fifth straight as they end a perfect five-game homestand with a record of 9-3-1, 3-0-0 while the Matadors fall to 10-3-0, 2-2-0.
UCR came into the game looking to go a perfect 5-0 in the longest homestand in program history. Scachetti made sure to get the Highlanders off on the right foot, scoring her team-record 11th goal of the season at 15:46. Junior midfielder Linda Allen, who had entered the game as a substitute seconds earlier, found Scachetti in stride with her first touch and the senior thundered a left-footed shot from 20 yards past CSUN goalkeeper April Cline.
UCR had numerous more chances but Cline came to the rescue every time to keep the scoreline close. Near the end of the first half, she stopped a one-on-one attempt by UCR freshman forward Loana Holness. In the second half, Cline made three saves within a minute, stopping back-to-back attempts from senior forward Vanessa Chanez and senior midfielder Angela Reling, then employing a kick save seconds later to keep out a header from senior midfielder Dani Geiger. Cline stopped six shots in total.
Once again, the UCR defense was solid to give the Highlanders their third consecutive victory by a one-goal margin. Junior goalie Tawny Poggio made four saves, three in the second half, for her third solo shutout of the season and 18th of her career.
The game was stopped for approximately 25 minutes with ten minutes remaining in the first half when CSUN’s Emily Niven collided head-to-head with a UCR player. Niven was stretchered off the field and taken to the nearest hospital.
