UC Riverside 1, UC Santa Barbara - Box Score
Santa Barbara, CA—Senior midfielder Dani Geiger scored in the 14th minute for the game’s only goal as UC Riverside maintained its perfect start to Big West play, defeating UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Friday night in Santa Barbara. The win was the Highlanders’ sixth straight as they post their fourth successive ten-win season at 10-3-1, 4-0-0. UCSB falls to 7-8-0, 1-2-0.
The scoring play began when a UCSB defender was attempting to switch the ball from left to right, across the penalty box. Santa Barbara defender Katie Dwyer attempted to get a head on the cross, clearing it out of the zone, however the ball went up in the air in front of UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Considine. Considine came off her line to punch the errant ball out of her box but again the ball wound up going straight in the air. Geiger then stepped in to head it over Considine for her first goal of the season.
The UCSB and UCR defenses did the rest. UCSB outshot the Highlanders 10-6 but UCR junior goalie Tawny Poggio and the defense held firm. Poggio wound up with three saves while Considine had five saves for UCSB.
The Highlanders have now reached the ten-win plateau in each of the past four seasons. The win keeps UCR in first place in the Big West standings and puts them at 4-0 in conference play for the first time in school history. They put that record on the line at 1 p.m. Sunday at three-time defending conference champs Cal Poly.
