UC Riverside 3, Sacramento State 0 - Box Score
Sacramento, CA—UC Riverside claimed its first victory of the 2005 season, defeating Sacramento State 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field in Sacramento. Three first half goals sealed the victory for the Highlanders, who complete their season-opening road trip with a 1-0-1 record.
For the second time in as many games, UC Riverside opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Junior Linda Allen took a pass from senior Dani Geiger, shooting past Jennifer Lawrence into the lower corner for her fourth career goa after just 8:40l.
On Friday night, the Highlanders scored first, only to see Nevada equalize in the dying moments. UCR was determined not to let that happen two games in a row and looked to last year's scoring co-leaders to put Sunday's game out of reach.
Senior midfielder Renee Scachetti put UCR ahead 2-0 at 20:39. Junior forward Kelly Ferguson threaded a pass through the Hornet defense, finding UCR's all-time leading scorer. Scachetti's finish was perfect for her 17th career strike and gave the Highlanders some breathing room.
After tying Scachetti for the team lead in goals in 2004, sophomore Jenna Leonti made sure to keep pace with the senior at the start of 2005. Just five minutes after Scachetti scored, Leonti got in on the act, pouncing on a rebound of a Scachetti shot to slot home her first of the year and ninth career goal at 25:57.
The Hornets (1-1-0) hit the crossbar in the first half and had a goal disallowed in the second but could not breach the Highlander goal despite outshooting UCR 5-3 in the second half. UCR junior goalie Tawny Poggio stopped seven shots before giving way in the 88th minute to freshman Brittany Goetz. Goetz made one save in two minutes to preserve the shutout in her first collegiate action.
Lawrence stopped three shots in goal for the Hornets.
The Highlanders improved to 2-1 all-time against the Hornets with their second straight victory over Sac State in the teams' first meeting since 2002. UCR continued its streak of non-conference games without a loss, improving to 12-0-1 since falling to Denver on September 28, 2003.
