UC Riverside 2, San Jose State 1 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside women’s soccer team began its 2005 home campaign with a 2-1 victory Sunday over the visiting San Jose State Spartans in front of 164 fans at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The Highlanders improve to 2-0-1 on the season while the Spartans drop to 0-5-0.
After beginning the season with two road games, the Highlanders were eager to play in front of their home fans. That eagerness paid off after just 2:37 when senior Vanessa Chanez headed home the opening goal following a scramble in the box. The play had started down the right wing, as senior Angela Reling sent a cross into the middle, where senior Renee Scachetti met it with a thundering header. The ball caromed off the crossbar back to Scachetti, whose second attempt was parried by SJSU goakeeper Adrienne Herbst. The ball came back out to Chanez, who headed her first goal of the season and 11th of her career, moving her into sole possession of second place all-time at UCR. Scachetti was credited with her second assist of the season.
The Highlanders had much of the run of the play in the first half but could not add to their tally despite outshooting the Spartans 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes. It took until the 70th minute for UCR to get its second goal as freshman Sarah Mohammadi found Scachetti on the right side. The senior took aim from 25 yards out, rifling her shot past Herbst for her team-leading second goal of the year and UCR-best 18th of her career.
San Jose State, which had opened the season with three straight losses to Big West Conference teams, made sure the final 12 minutes would be exciting, grabbing an equalizer at 77:55. Liz Behlen collected a loose ball in the UCR penalty area and spun through two defenders before sending a low shot into the right-hand corner for her second goal of the year.
With the game up for grabs, San Jose State pushed forward but shots from Jessica Scott and Behlen went wide down the stretch. Junior Linda Allen also had an attempt for UCR in the final moments but could not convert.
Junior Tawny Poggio stopped five shots in goal for the Highlanders while Herbst made four saves for the Spartans. SJSU held a 10-9 shot advantage, marking the third straight game in which the Highlanders had been outshot.
UCR ran its streak of consecutive non-conference games without a defeat to 14 games, improving to 13-0-1 since last losing on September 28, 2003. They have won seven straight home non-conference games, dating back to 2003.
