San Diego State 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside women's soccer team suffered its first non-conference loss since Sept. 28, 2003, as San Diego State scored in the 84th minute to edge the Highlanders 1-0 in Friday night's opening game of the 2005 Nike/Holiday Inn Invitational hosted by UC Irvine. The loss drops UCR to 2-1-1 this season while the Aztecs improve to 4-2.
UCR entered the game undefeated in its last 14 non-conference games, going 13-0-1 in that span. The Highlanders were also 7-0 in neutral site games, outscoring opponents 32-0. UCR had also not trailed thus far in the 2005 season and, for most of Friday's game, those streaks looked safe. SDSU's Jen Mello had other ideas, finishing off a move with a shot from inside the 18-yard box that beat UCR junior goalie Tawny Poggio. Erika Sutton and Mariko Strickland were credited with assists on the play, which left UCR with five minutes to equalize. The Highlanders were unable to grab the crucial goal, falling to their first defeat of the season.
The Aztecs outshot the Highlanders 12-3, with sophomore forward Kacie McElrath registering all three of UCR's shots off the bench. Poggio made six saves in goal for UCR while Christi Yount stopped a pair of shots for the Aztecs.
