UC Riverside 5, Columbia 1 - Box Score
Irvine, CA—Sophomore forward Kacie McElrath scored two goals and added an assist in leading the UC Riverside women's soccer team past Columbia, 5-1, in the UC Irvine Nike/Holiday Inn Invitational at Anteater Stadium Sunday. With the victory, the Highlanders improve to 3-1-1 while Columbia drops to 1-2-1.
Two days after seeing its 14 game non-conference unbeaten streak end at the hands of San Diego State, UCR put a season-high five goals past the Lions.
Senior midfielder Renee Scachetti also scored a pair of goals for the Highlanders, who also got a goal from junior midfielder Linda Allen. McElrath got the day started by scoring her first goals of the season in the first 19 minutes of the game. The opening goal came after 10:13 as she found the net off a pass by senior forward Vanessa Chanez, who registered her second assist of the year and school-record 11th. Eight minutes later, McElrath made it 2-0, converting a pass from senior midfielder Angela Reling for her ninth career goal, moving her into UCR's top-five in that category.
Columbia's Jana Whiting scored in the 33rd minute on an assist from Cici Northup to cut the deficit to 2-1 before Scachetti notched her first goal of the game four minutes later to give UCR a 3-1 lead at halftime. It was Scachetti's team-leading third goal but she was not done.
UCR made it 4-1 at 59:04 as Scachetti took a pass from McElrath to give the Highlanders a commanding lead. Allen closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute with her second goal of the season.
Junior Tawny Poggio and freshman Brittany Goetz each had one save in goal for UCR. Allison Vespa recorded three saves for Columbia while Rebecca Taylor had one. UCR outshot the Lions 12-4 in the match.
