UC Santa Barbara 4, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Santa Barbara, CA—UCR fell to 1-1 in Big West Conference play and 7-5 overall as they were defeated by UC Santa Barbara (5-5-2, 2-0-0) 4-0, in their second road match of the weekend.
After a hard fought 2-1 victory in double-overtime on Friday night, at Cal Poly, the Highlanders didn’t have enough to keep up with the surging Gauchos in the second half.
UCSB’s freshman Jacqui Simon scored her second goal of the season in the 27th minute on an assist from Brooke Salyer. Going into the half UCR was only a play away from tying the match, despite being out shot 10-1 in the opening period.
That game-tying play almost came to fruition in the opening minute of the second-half when the Highlanders’ leading scorer Tessa Lennala fired a shot that beat the keeper, only to ricochet off the left post.
That, however was the last time UCR would come close to evening the score as Kailyn Kugler score her first of two goals at 53:45. Kugler netted her second goal at 65:41. Assists were credited to Michelle Russell and Katrina Wright on the first of Kugler’s goals and to Jessie Edmonds on the second.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders Russell scored a goal only 15 seconds later at 65:56 on a rebound, for the 4-0 final.
UCR will host their first Big West match this Friday, Oct. 12 as they take on Pacific. The first of three consecutive home conference matches is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
