Coppolo becomes third freshman to score for UCR

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-7-1, 0-2-1 Big West) returned to the road on Wednesday afternoon at Hornet Field with a 1-1 draw with Sacramento State (4-3-4, 0-1-2).

Abilgail Coppolo's salvaged a point for the Highlanders with an 89th minute equalizer.

KaMia Elliott made her first of seven first-half saves in the 10th minute, adding stops in the 11th and 14th.

Coppolo forced the Hornets' keeper into action with an attempt in the 15th minute. Coppolo later conceded a free kick and Sac State kept the ball in its attacking third with a corner, but UCR cleared the damage.

Elliott made two more saves in a one-minute span, taking away the top left and bottom right corners. Rebecca Hernandez and Morgan Humphrey each won free kicks to usher in the final 15 minutes of the half before a handful of substitutes entered the pitch.

UC Riverside tried its luck three more times in the final five minutes of the half.

Coppolo logged a second shot in the 46th minute before Sac State broke the deadlock in the 50th.

The back line blocked back-to-back attempts from the hosts on the hour mark before another slew of Highlander entered the match.

Harlem Hipps logged an off-target attempt just inside 20 minutes, but it was Coppolo's equalizer with the 89th minute heroics as UC Riverside remained unbeaten when scoring after the 75th minute.

The Highlanders continue Big West play on Saturday, October 3, with a 7:00 pm start against UC Irvine at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Tickets are available now at www.GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
