Elliott makes six saves in Saturday night matchup
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-9-1, 0-4-1 Big West) continued its home stand at the UCR Soccer Stadium on Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to UC San Diego (6-3-4, 2-1-2).
Both sides combined for just five shots through the first 19 minutes before Abigail Coppolo headed away a dangerous free kick. The Tritons lifted a shot over the bar just before the 20-minute mark. Sanaa Guyness cleared a ball off the line in the 23rd minute.
Mia DiLeo swung in a corner in the 31st minute to no avail, seeing the ball booted out of play.
Paige Gartner crossed a ball in the 36th minute that just missed its target in front of goal. UCR won a corner in the 37th that was dealt with. UC Riverside avoided disaster in the 38th on the counterattack.
VAR confirmed a UC San Diego penalty in the 39th minute that the visitors buried into the top shelf.
Both sides found solid scoring opportunities five minutes into the second half with DiLeo streaking down the wing and UC San Diego using the long ball on the counterattack. A Triton set piece in the 54th minute went into the wall as the Highlanders kept the deficit at one.
UC San Diego doubled its lead in the 56th minute from a narrow angle before Coppolo nearly pulled one back with a set piece header. The freshman went on the counterattack and crossed one into Finley Aghassi, who narrowly cleared the crossbar in the 59th minute
Natalie Darling slid an offside ball into Harlem Hipps in the 65th minute that would've pulled one back for UCR. DiLeo tried to connect with Paige Gartner in the 83rd on what would've been offside regardless.
UC Riverside returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 14, for a 7:00 pm matchup at Cal State Bakersfield on ESPN+.
