Mustangs Defeat Highlanders, 70-54

The Cal Poly Mustangs posted a 70-54 win over the host UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West contest in front of 1,048 fans at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside Thursday.
The Mustangs improved to 15-10 overall and 6-5 in the Big West, while UCR is now 6-21 overall and 1-11 in the Big West.
Senior guard Justin Bell led the Highlanders with 15 points, freshman forward Henrik Thomsen had 12 and junior guard Larry Cunningham 10. The Highlanders struggled at times against the extended zone pressure of the Mustangs, shooting 38.5% (20-of-52) overall but 43.5% 10-of-23 from the three point line. UCR went to the line just four times, making two, compared to 20 trips for the Mustangs (making 12).
The Mustangs outrebounded UCR, 40-26 and were led by 13 points by Titus Shelton and 12 by Matt Hanson off of the bench. The Mustangs shot 48.1% (26-of-54) from the field and 35.3% (6-of-17) from the three point line. Poly led by as many as 19 at 66-47 with 3:41 left.
The Highlanders opened the game with a flourish as Thomsen threw down an alley-oop dunk from Cunningham, then followed with a three as UCR jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. UCR led 13-6 with 13:31 left on a three by Bell, but Cal Poly went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-15 lead. They extended the lead to five at at 23-18, but UCR came back with a trio of threes to take a 27-25 lead. But the Mustangs scored the last seven points of the half to make it 32-27 at the intermission.
The Highlanders were 10-of-27 (37.0%) from the field and 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the three point line. The Mustangs were 13-of-28 (46.4%).
