The UC Riverside Highlanders lost to the host Cal State Northridge Matadors, 89-69 in a Big West Conference game in front of 1,025 fans at the Matadome in Northridge Thursday.
UCR is 5-18, 1-8 in the Big West, while Northridge is 11-12, 4-6.
Junior guard Larry Cunningham led all scorers with 24 points and sophomore Chris Johnson had 19 including five threes as the Highlanders had 13 treys, their second highest total of the season. UCR shot 36.7% (22-of-60) overall and 43.3% (13-of-30) from the three point line.
The Matadors had five players in double figures, led by a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds by Calvin Chitwood. Jayme Miller had 16 off of the bench for the Matadors, who shot 56.3% (36-of-64) overall.
The Highlanders committed 12 turnovers in the first half, and those giveaways led directly to the Matadors' 41-30 lead at the intermission as CSUN outscored UCR on points off of turnovers, 18-7. Northridge had balanced scoring with five players scoring at least six points and outscored UCR in the paint 26-4. Cunningham led all scorers with 12 points.
UCR got to within six points in the second half with a nice outside shooting performance, but just couldn't stay with the Matadors' inside presence as Northridge outscored them in the paint, 54-12. The Highlanders cleaned up their turnovers in the second half, committing just four, but were outrebounded 27-14 and saw the Matadors block six shots in the period.
The game marked 364 days since senior guard Dedrick Bates suffered torn knee ligaments as the Highlanders lost to the Matadors in Riverside on February 9, 2005.
