UCR Volleyball Drops Conference Match to the Beach

The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (7-14, 2-4) opened the first of a back-to-back two game homestand on Friday evening with a 3-0 loss to Long Beach State (15-4, 5-2) at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
The Highlanders started the game with a service ace by Brittany Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) and then proceeded to take a 9-4 lead off five UCR kills. The 49ers rallied back and took their first lead of the set, 17-16, before outscoring the Highlanders eight to two to take set one 25-18.
UC Riverside again owned the first point of set two off a Kelly Simpson (Modesto, CA) kill. The Highlanders kept it close before Long Beach erupted for 11 straight points to extend the lead 20-7. UCR then put together a seven-point rally of their own before ultimately succumbing to the Beach 25-16.
For the third straight set, the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead off a Dominique Cowling (Benicia, CA) kill but fell behind and lost the match 25-15.
Kelly Fink had a game-high 15 kills for the Highlanders, while Dominique Cowling added 10 kills and Brittany Murrey paced UCR with 17 assists.
UCR concludes the second game of their Big West weekend tomorrow evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside as UC Santa Barbara travels to the Inland Empire for a 7:30 pm start.
