Highlanders Honor Four Seniors
The UC Riverside Volleyball Team honored the accomplishments of their four seniors, Friday evening at the UCR Student Recreation Center, but the Cal Poly Mustangs spoiled the celebration beating the Highlanders, 3-0. Outside hitters Kelly Fink and Amy Read, middle blocker Raquel Salinas and defensive specialist Kimberly McNeal each played their last home match for UCR with their parents and family members joining them on the court in a pre-match ceremony.
Cal Poly (16-10, 11-4) took a 10-4 lead early in the first set, but the Highlanders (8-22, 3-12) scored the next three points to cut the deficit to three, 10-7. The Mustangs pushed their lead to seven on several occasions before UCR shaved the advantage to four at 19-15. It proved to be to little too late, however, as the Highlanders eventually fell 25-19.
UCR found themselves down 14-7 in the second set causing Head Coach Sue Gozansky to call a time out. Whatever she said worked initially as UCR scored three of the next four points and five of the next eight before the Mustangs took control of the set, scoring the next three points and eight of the final 12 for the 25-16 win.
In the third and final set, the teams were tied early at four apiece before Cal Poly went on a 10-3 run and never looked back eventually taking the deciding game, 25-13.
The Highlanders end the season on Saturday with a road match at UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm.
