Box Score
The UC Riverside men’s basketball team made it four wins in a row Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders (4-1) traveled nearly 2,700 miles cross country to upend the Colgate Raiders, 54-44. It is the first four-game winning-streak in the Highlanders’ Division I history, and the team’s longest streak since the program put together five consecutive wins from February 4-12, 2000.
UC Riverside jumped out to an 8-2 lead early as the Raiders struggled to make a field goal until 10:45 remaining in the first. The Highlanders weren’t faring much better, however, as that bucket made the score 8-4. Colgate cut the lead to 11-10 on an Anthony Hill three-pointer with 6:58 to go but the Highlanders scored 12 of the next 17 points to take a 23-15 lead into the locker room.
UCR held Colgate to 26.7 percent shooting from the field in the first, and a Raiders starter didn’t dent the field goal column until 1:46 remained in the period. Aaron Scott and Jalonni Diggs each had five points in the first to lead the Highlanders, but UCR could only connect on 34.5 percent of their own shots in the period.
UC Riverside scored the first two baskets of the second half to push their lead to 12. The Raiders, meanwhile, struggled again to find the basket failing to score a field goal in the second half until 13:20 remained on the game clock. By then the score was 32-17. It remained a double-digit lead until the 7:50 mark when Colgate drained a jumper just inside the three-point lane to cut the Highlanders advantage to nine at 35-26.
With 5:40 to go, a Raiders’ three-ball cut the lead to eight at 39-31. Just over three minutes later, a Colgate steal and a Joe Hoban three-pointer cut the lead to 46-40 with 1:25 to go. Brandon Dowdy knocked down four free throws while Javon Borum and Sean Cunningham each nailed a pair down the stretch to give the Highlanders their 10-point margin of victory. Scott paced UCR with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double on the night while Jesse LoBue added nine points.
The Highlanders next travel to Evanston, Illinois where they face off against the Northwestern Wildcats on Monday, December 1. Game time is 6 pm PT.
Notes - The Highlanders four-game winning streak is the team’s longest since late in the 1999-2000 season when they strung five wins together from February 4 through the 12. It is the longest winning streak in the team’s seven-plus year Division I history.
UC Riverside was ranked 255 in the most recent USA Today Sagarin rankings which include games played through November 28. There are 347 institutions currently fielding Division I basketball programs.
UCR traveled nearly 2,700 miles eastward to face the Raiders, and will travel more than 2,600 miles westward when they head to Hawaii in late December.
Javon Borum had his string of four straight double-digit scoring efforts snapped as he was held to two points in 26 minutes of play.
