Box Score
The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team had hopes of returning from its two-game cross-country road trip with a 5-1 record, but they had to settle for a split and a 4-2 mark as they fell to Northwestern 59-43 on Monday evening.
The game was tight through the first eight minutes of play as a Jesse LoBue jumper with 11:31 left in the first cut the Northwestern advantage to 11-10, but the Highlanders didn’t score their next bucket until the 4:33 mark. That Jalonni Diggs basket made the score 23-12. UCR’s offensive woes continued as they managed just two points the rest of the way while the Wildcats built a 32-14 halftime lead.
The Highlanders connected on just 6 of 25 shots (24.0%) in the period and turned the ball over eight times. They also only took two free throws as the Wildcats defense clogged up the middle. Meanwhile, Northwestern was connecting on 44.0 percent of their shots and hitting seven of nine from the line.
UCR came out of the break energized scoring 11 of the first 17 points in the half, but a 7-0 Northwestern run gave them a 20-point lead at 45-25 with 12:21 to go. The Highlanders continued to battle, cutting the Northwestern lead to 11 at 51-40 with 4:26 to go, but they could only manage three points the remainder of the way. Christian Soto and Brandon Dowdy paced the Highlanders with 12 points apiece.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday evening home game against Southern Utah. Tip time at the UCR Student Recreation Center is 7 pm PT.
Notes - UC Riverside’s four-game winning streak was the longest streak in the team’s Division I history. The Highlanders are now 5-37 in non-conference road games during their seven-plus year DI history. UCR has held each of its last five opponents under 60 points.
