The UC Riverside volleyball team (8-18, 3-8) won the first set of Friday evening's Big West Conference tilt against Pacific (9-13, 8-4) at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, but could not hold on to the match as the Tigers won the next three sets to claim a 3-1 victory.
Down 22-14 in the fourth, the Highlanders scored five straight points to close the gap to three at 22-19 before the Tigers finished out the set and match 25-20. Both teams were evenly matched early in the first set as there were 11 ties in as many points. After falling behind 18-16 the Highlanders took the lead for good at 20-19 off a Pacific attack error and staved off a late Tiger rally to take set one 25-23.
Tied at 13 in the second UCR scored four straight points off three Pacific errors and a Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kill to take a 17-13 lead. The Highlanders could not hold on, however, as the Tigers came from behind to win the second set 25-22 and tie the match at one apiece. UCR fell behind in the third set 10-3 but another Fink kill capped off a rally as the Highlanders pulled to within three at 18-15. However, Pacific then rattled off seven consecutive points to close out the set 25-15 and take a two games to one lead heading into the pivotal fourth set.
Fink led UCR with a team-high 12 kills while Raquel Salinas (San Leandro, CA) added eight. Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) had a team-high 19 digs while Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) contributed 17 digs and 38 assists.
