The UC Riverside volleyball team (8-19, 3-9) faced off against UC Davis (12-14, 4-9) on Saturday evening in the second game of a Big West Conference two-night homestand at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. Like the previous night against Pacific, UCR battled to four sets before losing 3-1.
UCR fell behind early in the first at 7-4 but then outscored the Aggies five to one to take their first lead of the set, 9-8, capped off by a Raquel Salinas (San Leandro, CA) kill. UCR and UCD then traded points until Davis scored five consecutive points to open up a 20-15 lead as they eventually went on to take the set 25-19.
The Highlanders dominated set two from the get go as they opened up a 5-0 lead off three Aggie errors and two UCR kills. UC Riverside would extend the lead to as many as 10 points on six different occasions before closing out the set with a 25-13 win. The Highlanders hit .375 to Davis' .029 as UCR tied the match at one apiece.
Set three was quite the opposite of its predecessor: UCR had an early 4-2 lead off a Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kill, but after a 6-6 tie UC Davis rattled off three straight points and went on to further extend the lead to eight at 17-9. The Highlanders then closed the gap to four, 17-13, off four straight points but could not hold off the Aggies as they outscored UCR eight to three to win the set 25-16 and take a two games to one lead.
Tied at 17 apiece in the pivotal fourth set, UCR could not stave off an Aggie rally as UCD scored eight straight points to close out the set and game 25-17.
Fink led UCR with 15 kills and only one error to hit a blistering .483. Shannon Moyneur (Valley Center, CA) was one block shy of her fourth double-digit block game as she led with a game-high nine blocks including one solo. Brittany Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) added a team-high 13 digs and 20 assists.
UCR is back in action for another Big West doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 15 as the Highlanders travel to Long Beach State and Cal Poly respectively. Both games are slated for 7:00 pm.
