The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team picked up two three-game sweeps in the final day of the Montana Invitational to improve to 3-1 on the year. The Highlanders 3-1 record ties the school Division I era mark for best four-game start to a season most recently accomplished by the 2005 squad. UCR's three-game winning streak is also the program's longest streak since the 2005 team ran off 10 straight wins from September 2 to 23.
The Highlanders led comfortably for most of the first game before the Bulldogs closed to within two at 16-14. However, UCR ended the game on a 9-3 run to take a one games to none lead. An 8-2 run midway through the second game helped the Highlanders secure a 2-0 advantage, but closing out Gonzaga in the third set was far from easy. The Bulldogs stormed out to a 12-4 lead, but UC Riverside scored the next five points and slowly climbed back into the game taking its first lead at 20-19. A Gonaga service error gave the Highlanders the 25-22 win.
Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) recorded 15 kills in the match while Kelly Simpson (Modesto, CA) added 10. Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) paced the team in assists with 30 earning her a spot alongside Fink on the All-Tournament team.
In the first match of the afternoon, UCR had to battle for each win of the three-game sweep over Bradley. In the first, the Highlanders never trailed, but they also never led by more than three points finally taking the game, 25-22. In game two, Bradley took an early lead, but UC Riverside closed out the 25-15 win on a 13-5 run. The final game saw the Highlanders erase a three-point deficit midway through to pick up the win, 25-22.
Simpson and Fink each had 11 kills in the match, and Brittney Murrey added 25 assists.
The Highlanders welcome UCLA to the Student Rec Center on Wednesday, Sept. 3 for UC Riverside's 2008 home opener. The match begins at 7 pm.
