Toreros Too Hot for Highlander Volleyball

The UC Riverside Highlanders tried to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday against #17 San Diego (9-1), but unfortunately the Toreros were too hot to handle. UCR (5-8) dropped three straight sets 25-22, 25-15, and 25-28 en route to their sixth consecutive loss of the season.
The first set was a battle the entire way. San Diego slowly built a 20-14 lead, only to see the Highlanders continually chip away at the score. UCR went on an eight to three rally and closed the game within one, 23-22, off a Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) kill, before the Toeros closed out the set with two straight points.
Battling in the second and tied at 9-9, San Diego's Jaimarie Sutherland's attack error gave UCR their first and only lead of the set. The Highlanders were then unable to stave off a 15-5 San Diego rally. In the third set and down 24-15, UCR scored three straight points capped off by back-to-back service aces by Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) to close the gap before finally succumbing to match point.
Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) led UCR with seven kills and eight digs, while Brittney Murrey had a hand in a game-high three blocks and led the team with 22 assists.
The Highlanders have a 10-day hiatus before beginning Big West Conference play against the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sept. 27 at 7 pm.
