Volleyball Travels to Cal State Fullerton On Thursday For Big West Match
10/12/2009 10:03:55 AM | Women's Volleyball
The UC Riverside volleyball team travels to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening for a Big West Conference match up beginning at 7:00 pm. This is the first meeting between the clubs this season but the 34th meeting in the two programs history. The Highlanders have won just three matches against the Titans since transitioning to Division I in 2001, but two of the last four matches have gone into five sets.
The Highlanders are coming off a 1-1 week against CSU Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge in which UCR used a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at CSUB to earn their second win of the year in non-conference action, but fell 3-1 at CSUN the next night. Tonbara Youpele (pictured) posted a career-high 20 kills at CSUB.

NEW FACE AT THE HELM
For the first time in 39 years the UC Riverside women's volleyball team has a new head coach at the helm of the program. The Highlanders hired former US Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach Ron Larsen on May 1, 2009, replacing longtime coach Sue Gozansky who retired after the 2008 season. Larsen earned his first win as a member of the Highlanders in a 3-2 marathon battle at Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
MAY I ASSIST YOU PLEASE?
Senior setter Brittney Murrey ended the 2008 season ranked third all-time in Highlanders history in assists (2,639) and assists per game (8.8). The El Cerrito, CA native will set her sights on surpassing Kym Murphy (3,407) at the second slot, but has a ways to go before nearing Regina Carbajal with 4,492 assists at the top spot.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Senior outside hitter Dominique Cowling was named to the 2009 Utah Classic All-Tournament team after tallying 39 kills and averaging 3.90 kills per game, while senior outside hitter / middle blocker Kelley Quinn was named to the 2009 Sac State Invitational All-Tournament team for matches played Sept. 4-5. Bianca Endersby was the third Highlanders tournament honoree as she was named to the Pepperdine Asics Classic All-Tournament team after UCR's matches in Malibu on Sept. 11-13.
BLOCK THIS WAY
Junior Shannon Moyneur and senior Angela Pizzella ended the 2008 season ranked first and tenth respectively on UCR's career blocks per game list. Currently Moyneur still ranks at the top of the Highlanders charts.
