Box Score - UC Davis 3, UC Riverside 1
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team played their first home match of the 2009 season on Friday night against UC Davis at the Student Recreation Center, but after a first set win 25-21, the Highlanders dropped the next three sets 27-25, 25-20, and 25-18 to lose the contest 3-1. UCR falls to 1-11 on the season and 0-3 in Big West Conference play, while UC Davis improves to 12-5, 3-0.
Three Highlanders tallied double-digit kills led by Tonbara Youpele (pictured) and Kelley Quinn's 13 kills apiece and Shelby LeDuff's career-high 12. Brittney Murrey recorded a game-high 56 assists while Amanda Nilsson posted a game-high 18 digs and Bianca Endersby had five blocks.
In the first set, there were eight tie scores before UC Riverside took the lead for good at 19-18 off a LeDuff kill. The Highlanders limited the Aggies to just seven kills and a .067 attack percentage as UCR closed out the set on a 7-3 run to take a 25-21 victory.
The second set was even more of a seesaw battle as there were 14 tie scores and four lead changes throughout. The Highlanders were at set point, 24-22, before an Aggie rally tied things at 24 apiece. UCD then took a 25-24 lead but a Youpele kill one possession later evened the score at 25 all. However, the Aggies used two straight points to even out the match at 1-1 with their 27-25 second set win.
In the third set the Highlanders had a 8-3 advantage early on before UC Davis rallied for eight consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead. From that point on UCR never got closer than two points as the Aggies took a 2-1 match lead with their 25-20 third set win.
Down 22-13 in the fourth set, UC Riverside rattled off four straight points to close the gap to five, 22-17, but were limited to just one more point in the set as the Aggies closed out the match 25-18.
The Highlanders complete their two-game homestand with a 7:00 pm match on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Pacific at the Student Recreation Center.
