
Volleyball Opens Home Season With Matches Against UC Davis and Pacific

The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team begins the home portion of their 2009 schedule with a 7:30 pm match against UC Davis at the Student Recreation Center on Friday evening. The next night, the Highlanders take on Pacific at 7:00 pm at the SRC. For Saturday's game, all fans wearing blue and gold get in for just $2!
The Highlanders and Aggies will meet up on Friday for the 42nd time in program history. UCR owns a 31-8-2 all-time record against UC Davis, stemming all the way back to the 1970s when both teams were Division II. Last year the teams split the season series with UC Riverside winning 3-1 on Oct. 10 and UC Davis earning a 3-1 win on Nov. 8.
UCR and Pacific will meet for the 17th time in Division I history, with the Tigers owning a 16-0 record in the D-I era. Prior to 2001, UCR and Pacific faced each other just one time before - on Sept. 24, 1977 in what turned out to be a 1-1 tie at a neutral location.
UCR is coming off an 0-2 Big West opening weekend at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly last Friday and Saturday. The Highlanders will look to earn their first conference win of the season this weekend.

The Highlanders are 3-5 in home openers at the SRC dating back to their first season of Division I play in 2001, while they are 4-4 in Big West home openers during those same years.

In the latest NCAA national stats, two Highlanders are ranked among the top-30 in three different categories. Redshirt freshman Bianca Endersby is ranked 28th in the country in blocks per set with 1.32, while senior Dominique Cowling is ranked 24th in kills per set with 4.21 and 27th in points per set with 4.78.
ALSO IN THE STATS
Three Highlanders are ranked among the top-10 in the Big West Conference in four different overall stat categories. Brianca Endersby leads all players with 1.32 blocks per game while Dominique Cowling is currently third in kills per game with 4.21 and eighth in services aces per game with 0.34, and Brittney Murrey ranks eighth with 7.68 assists per game.
NEW FACE AT THE HELM
For the first time in 39 years the UC Riverside women's volleyball team has a new head coach at the helm of the program. The Highlanders hired former US Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach Ron Larsen on May 1, 2009, replacing longtime coach Sue Gozansky who retired after the 2008 season. Larsen earned his first win as a member of the Highlanders in a 3-2 marathon battle at Sacramento State on Sept. 5.
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN
UC Riverside returns 12 players from the 2008 squad: six seniors, two juniors, and four redshirt freshmen. Head Coach Ron Larsen and his staff have brought in three true freshman, one junior college transfer, and one redshirt transfer to accompany the returners for the 2009 season.
MAY I ASSIST YOU PLEASE?
Senior setter Brittney Murrey ended the 2008 season ranked third all-time in Highlanders history in assists (2,639) and assists per game (8.8). The El Cerrito, CA native will set her sights on surpassing Kym Murphy (3,407) at the second slot, but has a ways to go before nearing Regina Carbajal with 4,492 assists at the top spot.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Senior outside hitter Dominique Cowling was named to the 2009 Utah Classic All-Tournament team after tallying 39 kills and averaging 3.90 kills per game, while senior outside hitter / middle blocker Kelley Quinn was named to the 2009 Sac State Invitational All-Tournament team. Bianca Endersby finished out as the Highlanders final tournament honoree as she was named to the Pepperdine Asics Classic All-Tournament team after UCR's matches in Malibu.
BLOCK THIS WAY
Junior Shannon Moyneur and senior Angela Pizzella ended the 2008 season ranked first and tenth respectively on UCR's career blocks per game list. Currently Moyneur still ranks at the top of the Highlanders charts.
