Murrey Moves To Second In Career Assists As UCR Falls 3-1 To UCI

Riverside, CA - Two nights removed from moving into a tie for second place all-time in career assists, senior Brittney Murrey (pictured) tallied 39 assists for the UC Riverside volleyball team on Saturday night in their 3-1 loss to UC Irvine to take a firm hold of the second slot with 3,446 career assists. She surpassed Kym Murphy '04 and is below Regina Carbajal '90 at the top spot.
The Anteaters (21-6, 10-4) won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20 before the Highlanders (6-19, 3-11) won the third set 25-21, hitting .265 while limiting UC Irvine to .175. Down the stretch, UCR broke open a 19-18 set and ran off seven points compared to the Anteaters three to force a game four.
In the fourth, however, UCI turned a 17-17 tie into a 20-17 advantage as they went on for the 25-19 victory.
Dominique Cowling led the Highlanders with 17 kills while Shelby LeDuff added 11. Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters with 18 kills while two other UCI players tallied double-digit attacks.
Cowling also led four UCR players in double-digit digs with her 23, while Murrey recorded a game-high five blocks and LeDuff added four blocks.
UC Riverside has two matches remaining on their 2009 docket. They travel to Long Beach State on Friday, Nov. 20 and return home for senior night at the Student Rec Center on Saturday, Nov. 21 as they take on Cal State Fullerton. Both matches are slated for 7:00 pm.
