Men's Basketball Holds Off Late San Jose State Run To Win, 70-66

The UC Riverside men's basketball team staved off a late San Jose State run Sunday afternoon to even their record at 2-2 with a 70-66 win over the visiting Spartans.
The Highlanders led by 10, 45-35, following a Brandon Dowdy (pictured) free throw with 13:29 remaining in the game, but the Spartans scored 17 of the next 23 points to take their first lead since early in the first half. Dwight Gordon stopped the run with a jumper in the lane to put UC Riverside back on top and the Highlanders scored 11 of their final 17 points from the free throw line to pull out the win.
The first half saw five lead changes and four ties, but the Highlanders scored the final six points of the period to take a nine-point lead into the locker room, 36-27.
It was by far the most complete half of basketball of the year for the Highlanders as they connected on 53.1 percent of their shots from the field compared to 42.3 percent for the Spartans and won the battle of the boards 18-14.
Eight players dented the scoring column for UCR in the period led by Kyle Austin's eight points and Dowdy's seven in nine minutes of play. Larry Gurganious scored six points in the period on 3 of 4 shooting on a variety of acrobatic moves in the paint.
After the break, the Highlander's lead fluctuated between six and nine points through the first six minutes of play before Dowdy connected on a free throw to give UCR its largest lead of the game, 45-35, with 13:29 to go. Mac Peterson scored eight of the Spartans 17 points during the team's subsequent 17-6 run and two possessions later, Justin Graham gave San Jose State its final lead of the game, 54-53, with a pair of shots from the charity stripe.
Gordon knocked down a pair of free throws with with 5:49 to give the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish. Austin finished with the fifth double-double of his career and second of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds and Dowdy added a season-high 14.
The UCR defense was even better in the second half, holding the Spartans to 35.5 percent shooting from the field and 26.7 percent from three-point range. San Jose State's Adrian Oliver, who scored 32 points against No. 14 Washington earlier in the week, was limited to 17 points on just 6 of 16 shooting.
The Highlanders don't play again until after the Thanksgiving break traveling to Sacramento State for a 1:05 pm PT tip on Saturday, November 28
