UC Riverside 109, Redlands 74
The UC Riverside men's basketball team wrapped up its preseason schedule Thursday evening with a 109-74 win over visiting Redlands. Junior forward Kyle Austin (pictured) paced the Highlanders with 17 points and nine rebounds. The 2009-10 regular season gets underway on Saturday, November 14 at New Mexico at 6 pm PT.
Veterans Austin, Sean Cunningham and Konner Veteto were joined in the starting lineup buy newcomers Larry Gurganious (Gonzaga transfer) and Dwight Gordon (Victor Valley College transfer). Gurganious showed early and often why the Highlanders were interested in bringing him to UC Riverside as he scored 15 points and picked up three steals on the evening. Gordon did a little bit of everything in his 20 minutes of floor time scoring two points, handing out three assists and grabbing three boards.
Veteto scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds as UCR dominated the glass against the Bulldogs, 57-32. His back-up David Chavarria posted a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double.
There wasn't a statistical category that the Highlanders didn't control on the night as they outshot Redlands from the field 52.1% to 41.9%, from three-point range 50.0% to 36.0% and from the line 77.1% to 54.2%. Given the rebound discrepancy it wasn't surprising that UCR also outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 42-24, and in second chance points 21-4. The Highlanders also led Redlands in fast break points, 14-7, and points off turnovers, 25-13.
In all, 15 players saw playing time for UC Riverside with 13 denting the scoring column, giving the Highlanders coaching staff one last look at the team before heading to "The Pit" next weekend.
