Men's Basketball Begins 2009-10 Season At "The Pit" in New Mexico

UC Riverside at New Mexico Game Notes
The 2009-10 Men's Basketball Season gets underway for the Highlanders on Saturday, November 14 at one of the most inhospitable places on the planet for visiting basketball teams—"The Pit" in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Follow the action as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey calls the game beginning at 6 pm PT right here on gohighlanders.com.
According to wikipedia, "Basketball writer John Feinstein once likened a visiting team's experience in The Pit to 'watching Roman gladiators emerging into a wall of sound.' This often results in painfully high decibel levels. For one game, the noise reached 125 decibels, just short of the threshold of pain."
The Pit was also the site for arguably the most memorable game in college basketball history when Jim Valvano's NC State Wolfpack upset the Houston Cougars in the 1983 NCAA title game, and Valvano ran around the court in search of someone to celebrate with following the game-winning shot.
It will be the Highlanders first visit to the historic arena, and their first game ever against the Lobos. New Mexico is coming off of a 22-12 season, including a 12-4 mark in the Mountain West Conference. An upset loss to Wyoming in the Mountain West Tournament cost the Lobos an NCAA Tournament berth, and they had to settle for an NIT appearance where they beat Nebraska before losing to Notre Dame on a buzzer-beater in the second round.
