Highlanders Square Off With UC Irvine On Saturday

The UC Riverside volleyball team continues Big West play on Saturday, Nov. 14 with a 7:00 pm match at the Student Recreation Center against UC Irvine. Live stats may be found here. The Anteaters and Highlanders are facing off for the second time this season, with then-No. 21 UC Irvine defeating UCR in three sets in their previous meeting.
GAME NOTES
MAY I ASSIST YOU PLEASE?
Senior setter Brittney Murrey tallied 41 assists in the Highlanders 3-1 loss against Long Beach State on Nov. 12, moving her into a tie for second place all-time in career assists. With three matches remaining on the 2009 docket, there is no doubt that the El Cerrito native will own sole possession of the second slot upon finishing her career with the blue and gold.

UC Riverside scored 31 points in the third set against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 6, the most points they have tallied since the 25-point rally format was initiated in 2008.
PARTY LIKE IT'S 2009
UCR posted back-to-back home victories on Nov. 6 and 7 in their matches against Cal State Northridge and CSU Bakersfield for the first time since the 2001 season. The Highlanders also won a set against Long Beach State on Nov. 12 -- a first since the 2003 season.
GIMME FIVE
Five of the six Highlanders wins during the 2009 season have been of the 3-2 variety: at Sac State on Sept. 5, at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 9, against Cal Poly on Oct. 22, at Pacific on Oct. 30, and vs. Cal State Northridge on Nov. 6.
CONNECT FOUR
The Highlanders earned their first four-set victory of the 2009 season against CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 7. Prior to that win, UCR had won each of their matches in five sets.
SMACK THAT
Seniors Dominique Cowling and Tonbara Youpele each recorded 22 and 20 kills respectively at CSUB on Oct. 9, and followed that up with identical kill tallies in the Highlanders win over Cal Poly on Oct. 23. Prior to this season, the last time two UCR players posted over 20 kills each came on Nov. 6, 2004 as Valeria Bueno and Jamie DeKiewiet tallied 23 and 27 kills respectively.
KILLER ATTACK
Dominique Cowling surpassed Michelle Close '93 after her matches against UC Davis and Pacific on Oct. 2-3 to take hold of the 10th spot on the Highlanders career total attacks list. She then moved up to ninth place after the Highlanders match at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 15 and is currently in eighth after tallying 50 attempts against Long Beach on Nov. 12.
