Montana's First-Half Three-Point Clinic Gives Grizz 67-52 Win Over UCR
12/19/2009 6:07:44 PM | Men's Basketball
The Montana Grizzlies connected early and often from three-point range Saturday evening, putting together a 16-0 run midway through the first and ultimately sending the Highlanders to a 67-52 defeat. Kyle Austin (pictured) led the Highlanders with 16 on the night.
Both teams played well offensively in the early going, but Montana began to pull away nailing a barrage of threes over the first 20 minutes of play. Averaging just over five made shots from long range on the season, they were nine for 16 heading into the locker room.
With 11:43 to go in the first half, a Bryson Hampton jumper made it 21-15 Montana, but the Highlanders offense went cold. The Grizz outscored UCR 16-0 over the next 7:05 to lead 37-15. Austin was held scoreless until 4:36 remaining in the first, but accounted for the Highlanders final seven points of the period as UC Riverside trailed 40-22 at the break.
In the first 20 minutes of play, Montana's Ryan Staudacher and Anthony Johnson were a combined 8 of 13 from the field including five of nine from three-point range for 21 points.
UC Riverside's offense remained stagnant after the break as the Highlanders began the period missing their first three shots and committing four turnovers. A Sean Cunningham three broke the drought with 4:26 gone in the half.
Montana pushed their lead to 28 points at 56-28, but UCR scored the next 11 points as Lateef McMullan knocked down two threes, Dowdy added a long ball of his own and, Austin scored on a stick back to make it a 17-point game, 56-39.
UC Riverside's defense picked up the intensity as well, as they held the Grizz to 36.0 percent shooting in the second half.
Another Austin jumper with 5:43 to go made it a 15-point game 57-42, and a pair of McMullan threes cut the advantage to 13 with 2:52 remaining, 63-50. The hole in which they found themselves was too great, however, and the Grizzlies had the win in hand
The Highlanders remain on the road traveling to Cedar City, Utah for a Monday, December 21 meeting with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Tip is scheduled for 6:05 pm PT.
