CSUN 77, UC Riverside 64 - Box Score
UC Riverside's Men's Basketball Team traveled to Cal State Northridge on Saturday evening on the heels of a three-game conference winning streak that propelled them into a tie for third place in the Big West. The Matadors, meanwhile, came into the meeting with a five-game winning streak that put them a half game up on Long Beach State in the race for first place in the conference. Something had to give, and it was the Highlanders falling 77-64 as they were unable to solve the CSUN offense in the second period.
UCR jumped out to an early 12-7 lead with 12:26 to go in the first as Christian Soto and Rudy Meo each scored four points during the run. Back-to-back three pointers by Brandon Dowdy and Jalonni Diggs four minutes later game the Highlanders a six-point lead, but the Matadors scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a three-point lead into the locker room.
Both teams shot well in the first period as UC Riverside connected on 12 of 24 shots from the field and Cal State Northridge made 10 of 24, including 5 of 13 from three-point range. Both teams had difficulty hanging on to the ball in the first 20 minutes of play with the Highlanders committing 10 turnovers and the Matadors coughing it up nine times.
CSUN started slowly pulling away in the second leading by eight with 17:43 remaining, by 10 with 14:30 to go and 14 with 6:41 left in the game. The Highlanders couldn't find an answer to the Matadors offense as three players scored in double figures after the break led by Rodrigue Mels 13.
Cal State Northridge was 17 of 32 from the floor in the second stanza including 7 of 16 from three-point range, while the Highlanders connected on just 9 of 22 shots after the break. Kyle Austin scored 14 of his team-high 16 points after the break making 11 of 12 shots from the free throw line.
The loss drops the Highlanders (14-10, 6-6) back into a tie for fifth place pending the outcome of several later games on the Big West Conference docket. The Matadors (12-10, 8-3) move one game ahead of idle Long Beach State for first place.
