Cal State Fullerton 4, UC Riverside 1 (10 inn) - Box Score
The UC Riverside baseball team found itself in the middle of another pitchers dual Saturday afternoon with Cal State Fullerton, but this time it was the Titans taking the 4-1 win courtesy of a three-run top of the tenth. The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday, March 29 at 1 pm PT.
Matt Montgomery got the start for UCR (16-5) and threw six innings allowing just six hits and one earned run. The Titans touched him for the first run of the day in the top of the third when Dustin Garneau led off the frame with a double, moving to third on a Joe Scott sacrifice bunt. He scored two batters later when Gary Brown singled to center.
Cal State Fullerton (17-4) sent Noe Ramirez to the mound for the start and he allowed just one hit through the first four innings of play. The Highlanders finally got the run back in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Nix drilled a triple off the wall in center field. Joey Gonzales followed with a grounder to short that Nix tried to score on, and he should have been out but Titans catcher Garneau let the throw get away from him and the game was tied at one. Ramirez was lifted in the eighth after going seven and two thirds and allowing just three hits and one walk.
The Titans had three opportunities to take the lead again in regulation, the first of which came in the top of the seventh. Garneau led off the inning with a single to right off of reliever Matt Andriese. A sac bunt by Scott moved him to second and a wild pitch sent him to third. Jeff Newman lifted a fly ball to center field that looked like it would score the run, but Carl Uhl's throw beat Garneau to the plate and the score remained tied at one. (Listen To John Ramey's call of Uhl's throw)
In the ninth, the Titans rallied again opening the frame with a Khris Davis double to center. Garneau walked and the Highlanders brought in Matt Larkins to replace Andriese. Scott picked up yet another sac bunt - his NCAA record tying fourth of the day - moving the runners to second and third. Tyler Hill got the pinch-hitting call for Cal State Fullerton and hit a grounder to second, but Bryan Horst's throw beat Davis home, and the score again remained 1-1.
Garneau advanced to third on the play, and Larkins subsequent pitch to Gary Brown skipped past Robert Brantly. Garneau raced home only to pick up the third out of the game for the Titans at the plate as Larkins tag came down just ahead of the slide.
UCR's luck finally ran out in the 10th. Kolby Moore came into replace Larkins and Cal State Fullerton opened the inning with two straight singles and a fielder's choice that scored the go-ahead run. the Titans plated two more in the frame for the final 4-1 victory.
