Highlanders Can't Finish Comeback vs. Gauchos, Fall 66-53
3/5/2009 8:44:25 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Santa Barbara 66, UC Riverside 52 - Box Score
UC Riverside's men's basketball team spotted the Gauchos the first 12 points of the ballgame Thursday evening at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, and it proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome as the Highlanders fell, 66-53. The loss drops UCR to 16-12 overall and 7-8 in conference. They are now tied with Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and UCSB for fourth place in the Big West which means they probably need a win and some help to secure the four seed for the conference tournament.
Javon Borum ended the game-opening scoring drought with a steal and layup with 5:06 to go in the first. Unfortunately for UCR, the Gauchos still had the hot hand and went on to lead by as many as 22 in the period, 32-10. UC Santa Barbara shot 57.7 percent in the first including 8 of 15 from three-point range (53.3%), but the bigger problem for the Highlanders may have been its turnovers. UCR gave up the ball 11 times in the first 20 minutes compared to five for the Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara used those statistical advantages to lead by 18 at the half, 42-24.
Coming out of the locker room, the Highlanders displayed a renewed effort on the defensive end of the floor as UCSB missed eight of its first nine shots and committed four turnovers in the first 7:25 of the second. By that time, UC Riverside had cut the Gauchos lead to nine at 44-35. A three-pointer by James Nunnally ended the 11-2 UCR run, but the Highlanders weren't done. Kyle Austin was fouled while making a layup with 9:24 to go and made the subsequent free throw to cut the UCSB lead to six. A Paul Reomer three pushed the lead back to nine, but an Austin three-ball made it 52-46 with 8:42 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, that was a close as they would get the rest of the way. UC Santa Barbara scored six straight to lead 58-46 with 7:33 left in the game and despite holding the Gauchos to 39.1 percent shooting in the second and committing just five turnovers after the break UCR was never able to get the lead down below double digits the rest of the way.
Austin led the Highlanders with 14 points on the night followed by Borum's 13. Nunnally led all Santa Barbara scorers with 15.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday evening matchup against Cal Poly. Tip time is 7:00 pm.
