Yunker's Overtime Goal Gives UCR 1-0 Win Over Visiting Texas State
8/30/2009 3:32:38 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Texas State 0
With 1:35 gone in the first overtime period Sunday afternoon, UCR's Sally Yunker (pictured) took an Ashley Parks pass down the left side of the Texas State defense and deposited a shot in the left-hand side of the Bobcats' net for a 1-0 Highlanders win.
It was the Anaheim, CA native's first goal as a collegian, and ended a match played in triple-digit temperatures at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The scoreboard thermometer reached its afternoon high of 107 degrees midway through the second period.
The heat took its toll on both teams and they subbed early and often to counter its effects. The Highlanders used 20 players on the afternoon, while the Bobcats called on 16. In fact, Yunker was credited with just 17 minutes on the day - the final nine of the first period, and the final six of the second period plus the 1:35 played in overtime.
UC Riverside had its chances to win the match in regulation, especially after Texas State defender Jessica Lewis picked up her second yellow card of the match with 22:50 remaining in the second period. The Highlanders outshot the Bobcats 18-11 overall, but Texas State keeper Deborah Ross was up to the task recording 10 saves on the afternoon.
Meanwhile, UCR goalie Jessica White picked up her first shutout as a collegian to go along with seven saves.
Next up for the Highlanders is a September 4 meeting with Southern Utah in the first match of a two-day tournament at UC Irvine. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm. Game two of the tournament for UC Riverside is on September 6 against Fresno state at 10:30 am.
