Box Score - Army 3, UC Riverside 1
Malibu, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team opened the third week of competition at the Asics Pepperdine Classic on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to Army, falling with scores of 25-19, 25-27, 25-14 and 25-21. The Highlanders drop to 1-6 on the season while the Black Knights improve to 7-2.
Trailing 7-4 in the first set, the Highlanders scored three straight points to tie things up at seven apiece off an Army attack error sandwiched between a Dominique Cowling (pictured) and Kelly Simpson kill. UCR again tied up the set at eight each but could get no closer throughout the remainder of the set as the Black Knights went on for the 25-19 win.
Army got out of the gate strong in the second set by scoring four consecutive points before the Highlanders even got on board. The Black Knights then opened up their largest margin of the set, 17-9, but saw UCR rally for five straight points to close the gap to three, 17-14. During that span, the Highlanders were led by two Cowling kills, one Shelby LeDuff kill, one Amanda Nilsson service ace, and an Army error.
Army then opened up a 21-15 lead, but UCR once again battled back by outscoring them 7-2 to tie up the set at 22 apiece. The Highlanders then took their first lead of the set, 23-22, off a Bianca Endersby service ace, and again at 24-23 on a service error by Army. After it was all squared at 25, UC Riverside put the set away by two consecutive kills by Cowling and LeDuff to tie up the match at 1-1 with their 27-25 win.
In the third set, though, the Highlanders fell behind early, 7-1, and never fully recovered as Army eventually went on to take the set 25-14. In the pivotal fourth set, UCR looked to push the game into five frames and had a 12-10 lead midway through before the Black Knights tied things at 12 and took the lead for good one point later, 13-12, as they went on to a 25-21 fourth set victory and the match.
Cowling posted her third double-double of the season with a game-high 20 kills and 13 digs. Simpson and LeDuff added seven and six kills respectively while Brittney Murrey recorded 25 assists and Katherine Castillo tied for the team high with 13 digs and added 15 assists.
UC Riverside continues play at the Pepperdine Asics Classic on Saturday with a 4:30 pm match against Seattle.
