Highlanders Head to Malibu for Pepperdine Asics Classic
8/21/2009 11:58:09 AM | Women's Volleyball
The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team returns to the courts this weekend at the Pepperdine Asics Classic, concluding their non-conference schedule with three games in Malibu, CA. The Highlanders face Army on Friday (4:30 pm), Seattle on Saturday (4:30 pm), and the host Waves, ranked No. 19 in the country, on Sunday (2:30 pm).
UCR and Army will be meeting for the sixth time in program history, with the Highlanders owning a 4-1 all-time record against the Black Knights. UC Riverside's match against Seattle on Saturday will be the first meeting between the two schools in the program's tenure.
The last time UCR and Pepperdine took to the courts was in 1978 - more than 30 years ago. The Waves have bested the Highlanders in each of their previous six attempts, so it'll be safe to say that UCR will look to pick up their first-ever series win this weekend. Pepperdine is the second ranked opponent the Highlanders will face this season, the first being #17 Utah back on Aug. 29.
The Highlanders are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Sac State Invitational, earning their first victory of 2009 in a 3-2 marathon win over Sacramento State last Saturday. Senior Kelley Quinn was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
