The Highlanders dropped their first match of the tournament on Friday evening in a 3-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast. GAME NOTES
THE REPLACEMENTS
The Highlanders, who scored 22 goals during the 2008 season, will need to replace the offensive production of their leading scorer from a year ago, Joel Crompton (8 goals, 1 assist, 17 points) who finished his UCR career ranked tied for second in career points and fourth in goals scored. Eight other Highlanders dented the back of the net in 2008 led by Cesar Diaz's four goals, Robert Cate's three and Nathan Paterson's two.
This season, five different members of the Highlanders have goals to their credit and none has more than one score—Normando Mariscal, Tyler Wilson, Joel Gracia, Robert Cate and Jeremy Clay.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
The Highlanders are utilizing both of their primary keepers this season with Cody Suppé picking up three starts so far on the year, and Ryan Schmitz getting two. The pair have combined to allow 1.99 goals per 90 minutes in 2009 compared to the 2.28 the team permitted a year ago.
ALL-TOURNEY TEAM
UC Riverside's David Lozano and Chris Smith were named to the Saint Mary's All-Tournament Team for their performances in the Highlanders' first two matches of the season against Sacramento State and Saint Mary's. The Highlanders dropped both games of the tournament by the thinnest of margins — 1-0 at Sacramento State on September 4 and 2-1 in overtime at Saint Mary's on September 6.
OVERTIME BLUES
The last time UC Riverside won a match that went into overtime was on November 12, 2005 in a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton. Since that time, the Highlanders are 0-3-11 in overtime matches.
