Gurganious' Lay-In With 1.3 Seconds Remaining Gives UCR 69-67 OT Win

UC Riverside 69, Long Beach State 67 (OT) Box Score
Riverside, CA—Larry Gurganious' (pictured) lay-in with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Highlanders men's basketball team a 69-67 come-from-behind win over Long Beach State Saturday evening at the Student Recreation Center (listen to the final possession). UCR (7-6, 1-0) trailed by as many as 11 points on the night and went more than 7 minutes in the first half without scoring, but Kyle Austin (17 points after the break) and Gurganious (11 points) found their offensive stroke after halftime to complete the comeback.
A three-pointer by Long Beach State's (6-8, 0-1) Greg Plater with 1:38 remaining in the first half pushed the 49ers lead to 11 points, finishing a 17-2 run in the process. The Highlanders scored the final four points of the half, however, to trail 28-21 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Beach still led by seven with 15:50 to go in regulation, but UC Riverside went on a 9-2 run to tie the game with 12:06 to go.
The score was still tied, 46-46, with 8:03 to go, when the Highlanders began building a lead of their own. An Austin jumper with 2:04 to go in regulation gave UCR a six-point lead, but LBSU scored eight of the last 10 points to send the game into overtime.
The teams appeared headed for another overtime period as the Highlanders found themselves in the middle of a broken play and the clock running down, but Gurganious found a hole in the 49ers defense dropping the ball through the hoop and giving UCR the win.
The difference in the second half was the Highlanders renewed effort at pounding the ball inside—UCR had two points in the paint in the first half, and 26 after intermission.
The tempo of the game was slowed by a cavalcade of foul calls—47 on the night which led to 63 combined free throw attempts—but neither team was able to capitalize much on their freebies as the 49ers missed 18 of 35 shots from the free throw line and the Highlanders missed 12 of 28.
The Highlanders don't have long to celebrate, however, as UC Santa Barbara comes to the Student Recreation Center on Monday, January 4 for a 7 pm tip.
