Two Late Free Throws Give Cal Poly 67-65 Men's Basketball Win Over UCR
1/21/2010 6:38:34 PM | Men's Basketball
Cal Poly 67, UC Riverside 65 Box Score
San Luis Obispo—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team turned up the defensive intensity in the second half Thursday evening forcing eight Cal Poly turnovers to erase a 12-point Mustangs lead, but Shawn Lewis made two of three free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to give Cal Poly a 67-65 win. The loss is the fifth in a row for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside (7-11, 1-5) trailed by four at the half, 36-32, but the Mustangs came out of the locker room on fire opening the period with an 11-3 run to push their lead to 12 with just 2:59 gone in the period. It was their biggest lead of the night. UCR began cutting into the Cal Poly (7-10, 4-2) advantage forcing a series of Mustangs miscues which they converted into 22 points on the night.
With 11:53 to go, it was 48-43 Cal Poly, but three possessions later, Rudy Meo's fast break basket cut the Mustangs lead to three, 53-50. Kyle Austin's lay-up the next time down the floor made the score 53-52, and Larry Gurganious's old-fashioned three-point play gave UC Riverside its first lead, 55-53, since 16:58 to go in the first.
The Highlanders still led, 58-57 with 4:52 to go, but a pair of Lewis free throws put the Mustangs back on top. With 1:33 to go it was 65-62 Cal Poly following a David Hanson layup, but Austin's pair of free throws made it a one-point game with 1:14 remaining. Austin was fouled again on the Highlanders subsequent possession, making one of two shots to tie the game.
The Mustangs called time out with five seconds left on the clock and Lewis ended up with the ball beyond the three-point line. As he rose to shoot, Austin was whistled for the foul sending Lewis to the line for three shots. He made the first and the last giving Cal Poly the win.
UC Riverside opened the game on a 7-2 run as Austin nailed his first three shots from the field scoring the Highlanders first seven points, and it was a good thing as Cal Poly started the game connecting on eight of their first nine shots including 4 of 4 from three-point range.
Austin's jumper with 12:26 to go tied the game at 18, but that was the last basket UCR would score over the next 3:41. That drought came during a 14-3 Cal Poly run capped off by a Justin Brown three-pointer with 6:42 to go.
With the Mustangs leading by 11, the Highlanders turned up the defensive pressure, and Cal Poly failed to score a field goal for the remainder of the half. UCR closed the period on an 11-4 run led by Meo's five points and Gurganious's four during the streak.
The Highlanders complete their four-game road swing on Saturday at UC Irvine. Tip is scheduled for 8 pm PT and will be televised live on FSN PrimeTicket. Patrick O'Neal and Michael Cage will have the call.
