Missed Shots, Late TOs Key 10-0 UC Davis Run In 60-50 Win Over UCR
1/28/2010 5:47:15 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Davis 60, UC Riverside 50 Box Score
Kyle Austin's jumper with 3:28 to go cut the UC Davis lead to one at 48-47, but the Highlanders missed three shots, two free throws and committed a turnover on their next four possessions as the Aggies went on a 10-0 run eventually taking a 60-50 win over the Highlanders.
The loss drops UC Riverside to 8-12 on the season and 2-6 in Big West play. It is also the Highlanders third consecutive home loss after starting the season 6-0 at the Student Recreation Center. The Aggies improved to 8-11 and 4-3 in conference.
Austin's jumper capped a 6-0 UCR run over a 3:13 stretch, and the Highlanders got a stop on the Aggies next possession giving themselves an opportunity to take the lead with three minutes to go. It would have been UC Riverside's first lead of the second half, but on UCR's next trip down the floor Sean Cunningham's pass missed the mark, and UC Davis was off and running in the other direction.
Dominic Calegari's stick-back made it 50-47 UC Davis, and after Cunningham missed a three-pointer and Austin misfired on two free throws, Todd Lowenthal's lay in made it 52-47 Aggies. Lowenthal was fouled on the play, missed the subsequent free throw but grabbed his own rebound and found Joe Harden open for a layup.
Trailing by seven, Cunningham missed another jumper, and a Calegari dunk made it an 8-0 UC Davis run. Dwight Gordon's shot with 37 seconds remaining missed the mark, and Harden nailed two free throws, capping the 10-0 run and effectively ending the game.
Austin led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the field, but missed nine of 10 free throws. The rest of the team made just nine of 31 field goal attempts. Harden led the Aggies with 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting while their leading scorer, Calegari, was saddled with foul trouble for much of the evening scoring nine points in 12 minutes.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday, 5 pm date with Pacific and ESPN2 at the Student Recreation Center. It is UC Riverside's debut appearance on any of the Worldwide Leader In Sports programming entities. Also in attendance will be members of our nation's military and the Wounded Warrior Project as the Highlanders host Military Appreciation Night and honor the men and women of the United States armed forces.
