Cal Poly Breaks Scoreless Tie 1:15 Into First OT For 1-0 Win Over UCR
10/2/2010 9:21:44 PM | Men's Soccer
Cal Poly 1, UC Riverside 0 (Overtime) - Box Score
Riverside--After battling to a scoreless tie in regulation, Cal Poly stole the ball in the Highlanders backfield early in the first overtime and David Zamora and Patrick Sigler executed a perfect give-and-go setting Sigler up for the game-winning goal just 1:15 into the bonus period.
The play was not without controversy as UC Riverside argued that a foul should have been called on the slide tackle that dislodged the ball leading to the Mustangs goal.
The teams were evenly matched through the first 90 minutes of play as Cal Poly led 14-13 in shots, while the Highlanders led 6-4 in shots on goal. The Mustangs had the best two scoring opportunities in regulation as they had two shots ricochet off the cross bar in the second half.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 3-6-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in Big West play. Cal Poly improves to 4-3-1 and 1-0-0 in conference.
The Highlanders next match is Saturday, October 9 against Cal State Fullerton. Kick off time at the UCR Soccer Stadium is at 7 pm PT.
