Cal State Fullerton Upends UC Riverside 2-1 In Men's Soccer Action

UC Riverside 1, Cal State Fullerton 2 - Box Score
Riverside—If you arrived late to Saturday evening’s Big West soccer match between UC Riverside (3-7-1, 0-3-0) and Cal State Fullerton (3-6-2, 2-2-0) you missed quite a bit of action as the Titans took a 1-0 lead just over one minute into the first half.
Mark Nelson crossed the ball into the box where Celso Alvarez deflected it to Jesse Escalante, who put it past UCR keeper Nick Goldreich for the early score.
It didn’t take long for the Highlanders to counter, however, as Cesar Diaz found Tyler Wilson in the box for a header in the sixth minute of play to tie the match at one.
With 3:12 to go before the half, Kevin Vargas scored an unassisted goal to give Cal State Fullerton a 2-1 cushion.
The Highlanders thought they had a chance at the equalizer as Arnie Sanchez was taken down in the Titans box with under a minute to go in the first period, but there was no call and Fullerton took a one goal lead into the locker room.
Despite several chanches by both teams in the second period, the three first-half goals were all they could muster.
Even thought the Titans scored two goals to the Highlanders one, UCR outshot CSF 24-17 including nine shots on goal to six.
The Highlanders are on the road at UC Davis this Wenesday for a 7 pm PT match against the Aggies. The team returns home on Sunday, October 17 for a 6 pm meeting with UC Santa Barbara.
