Cal Poly PIcks Up 1-0 Win Over UC Riverside In Women's Soccer
10/3/2010 3:23:56 PM | Women's Soccer
Cal Poly 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team outshot visiting Cal Poly 19-11 and took seven shots on goal to the Mustangs five, but it was Juile McKee's score in the 34th minute that accounted for the only goal of the match leading to a 1-0 Cal Poly victory.
Temperatures on the field were well over 100 degrees causing both teams to start the match slowly and conserve their energy. The teams combined for 13 shots in the period with just five coming on goal. The one that mattered was McKee's first goal of the season which came after the Highlanders had stopped a Cal Poly drive but failed to clear the ball out of the box. McKee grabbed the loose ball put it between the pipes for what would prove to be the game-winner.
The Highlanders had their best scoring opportunity with 4:36 gone in the second period when Candis Novis (pictured) got ahead of the Cal Poly defense and was able to get a foot on the ball just before colliding with two Mustangs including goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin. The ball bounced towards the goal, but caromed off the left post keeping the Cal Poly advantage at one.
The Highlanders fall to 1-8-2, 0-2-0 with the loss while the Mustange improve to 6-5-1 and 1-0-1 in conference. Next up for UC Riverside is a Friday, October 8 home match against Long Beach State at 7 pm PT. Time of the match is 7 pm PT.
