UNLV 85, UC Riverside 41 - Box Score
Las Vegas, NV—If the Highlanders were intimidated by the crowd of 12,970 at the Thomas & Mack Center Friday evening in their season opener it didn't show in the early going as they connected on two of their first three shots to lead the Runnin' Rebels, 4-2, with 1:08 gone in the first half. But UNLV showed why they are knocking on the door of a top-20 ranking early in the year, running their way to an 85-41 victory.
The Rebels took the lead for the first time on a three-pointer by Oscar Bellfield which made it 5-4 UNLV. They then slowly started to build their lead over the next several minutes pushing it to double-digits for the first time with 12:12 remaining in the first, 19-9.
It was still a 10-point game, 26-16, with 7:31 to go before the half, but UNLV closed the period on a 16-3 run to take a 42-19 lead into the locker room.
The Rebels scored the first eight points of the second half and never looked back as they clamped down on the defensive end forcing the Highlanders to miss 23 of 25 shots at one point.
UNLV limited UCR to just 22.4 percent shooting from the field while connecting on 53.3 percent of their own shots. Daymond Cowlah scored eight points to pace the Highlanders, while Tyquan Brown grabbed 11 rebounds. Chace Stanback led all scorers with 17.
The Highlanders travel back to the Inland Empire this evening to prepare for their home opener on Monday, November 15. The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens come to the Student Recreation Center for a 7 pm PT tip.
