Lamar 90, UC Riverside 75 - Box Score
Dallas, TX—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team dropped a 90-75 decision to Lamar Friday afternoon in the first game of the three-day SMU Invitational. The Highlanders committed 33 fouls on the day—the third most in the history of the program—while the Cardinals nailed 35 of 41 free throws to hold of all attempts at a UCR comeback.
The teams played evenly through the first nine-plus minutes with neither team leading by more than three. The Cardinals led 21-20 at that point, but a 7-0 run put them up eight, and the Highlanders could never regain the lead,
Lamar pushed its lead to double digits with 8:16 to go in the first and led by as many as 13 before a 9-0 UCR run late in the first closed the gap to three. The Highlanders committed four turnovers on their next four possessions, however, and the Cardinals took a 50-42 lead into the locker room.
Phil Martin led UCR with 11 points in the period on four-of-six-shooting from the field, and BJ Shearry added 10 points off of the bench.
Lamar scored the first basket of the second half to push its lead back to ten, but the Highlanders began chipping away once again climibing to within three with 5:55 gone in the period at 61-58.
It was shortly thereafter that UC Riverside committed its seventh foul of the half putting the Cardinals in the bonus for the remainder of the period. And they took advantage of it connecting on 21 of 24 shots from the charity stripe in the second which accounted for more than half of their 40 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
The score vacillated between three and ten points over the next nine minutes, but an 8-1 Lamar run late in the period put the game out of reach.
Martin and Shearry each finished with 13 points while Kareem Nitoto added 11 and Berry Elliott scored ten. Lamar's Brandon Davis led all scorers with 16 points and Donley Miner added 15.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday, November 20 game against the host SMU Mustangs at 3:30 pm PT. Follow all of the action as the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call from courtside to gohighlanders.com.
