UC Riverside 78, Montana State 67 - Box Score
Riverside—Kareem Nitoto scored 19 points and Javon Borum added 17 Sunday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center as the Highlanders improved to 4-6 with a 78-67 win over visiting Montana State (6-5). It was UC Riverside's 14th straight home win over a non-conference opponent.
It took a while for the Highlanders to find their groove as the Bobcats hit their first four shots while UCR misfired on their first two and committed two turnovers on their first four possessions. That helped Montana State take an early eight-point lead at 11-3.
It wasn't until midway through the first the Highlanders pulled even at 17 following a Delonte Taylor three-pointer. Kevin Bradshaw gave UC Riverside its first lead of the day on its next possession draining a pair of free throws. There were five more ties and two lead changes over the final minutes of the first half with the Highlanders taking a 37-35 lead into the locker room.
Taylor led UC Riverside with a career-high nine points at the break while Borum, Nitoto and Phil Martin added five each.
The teams traded baskets over the first four possessions of the second half, but the Highlanders took the lead for good on a Borum layup with 18:09 remaining on the clock. It remained a single-digit game until UCR went on a 7-0 run turning a 69-63 advantage into a 74-63 lead with 2:37 remaining on the clock.
Nitoto scored 14 of his points in the second half draining all four of his three-point field goal attempts. Borum added 12 after the break including both of his shots from long distance. As a team, the Highlanders made a season-high 11 threes on 19 attempts. That is the most threes the team has made in a single game since they went 13 of 25 against Cal Poly on January 2, 2009.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Tuesday, December 22 road game against the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
