CSU Bakersfield 89, UC Riverside 80-Box Score
Bakersfield, CA—The CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back draining 14 of 21 three-pointers on the night on their way to an 89-80 non-conference win over UC Riverside Wednesday night. It was the most three-pointers the Highlanders have ever allowed in a game tying the old record of 14 last set by CSU Bakersfield on this same date back in 2007.
Alex Johnson connected on the Roadrunners' first three-pointer with 32 seconds gone in the period, and it was the first of seven straight that CSUB would make over the initial 12:05 of play. The Roadrunners finished the half making 19 of 30 shots including 8 of 11 from beyond the arc.
Their largest lead in the first 20 minutes was 48-30 with 4:16 remaining, but the Highlanders went on an 11-2 run to make it a nine-point game at the half, 50-41.
CSUB's output overshadowed one of the best offensive halves of the year for UC Riverside as the Highlanders made 18 of 36 shots and owned the battle of the boards 17-12. Johnson led all scorers at the break with 16 including four of six from long range, while Elliott Berry paced UCR with 12 points.
The Roadrunners continued their hot shooting to open the second as Donavan Bragg nailed a three to open the final 20 minutes of play, and Bakersfield scored 16 of the first 20 points of the period to lead 66-45.
The Highlanders had one last run in them, as they closed to within 10 at 78-68. On UCR's subsequent offensive possession, Javon Borum was called for a questionable charge and Head Coach Jim Wooldridge picked up two technicals debating the call. Bragg made three of the four free throws tied to the technicals, and Johnson hit the record-tying three to push the lead back to 16 at 84-68.
Dennis Cutts took over on the sidelines for the Highlanders, and UCR cralwed back to within eight at 86-78, but could get no closer.
Johnson and Bragg led all scorers finishing with 26 points each—Johnson behind nine of 11 shooting including seven of nine three-pointers, and Bragg on nine of 16 from the field and three of four from long range. Berry led UC Riverside with a career-high 23 points and Kareem Nitoto scored 15 of his career-high 22 points after the break.
Next up for the Highlanders is a December 28 trip to UC Irvine as Big West Conference play gets underway. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
