UC Riverside 73, UC Irvine 68 - Box Score
Irvine, CA—Javon Borum scored a career-high 30-points including 23 in the second half as the Highlanders erased a 10-point second-half deficit on their way to a 73-68 Big West Conference road win over the UC Irvine Anteaters Tuesday evening.
It was the second road win of the season for the Highlanders (5-7, 1-0) who have struggled away from the friendly confines of the Student Recreation Center so far this season dropping seven of eight on unfamiliar floors.
Those struggles continued early against the Anteaters (6-7, 0-1) as UC Riverside committed six turnovers in the first six minutes of the game. UC Irvine went on a 14-0 run during that time to take a 19-9 lead with 7:25 gone in the first. Elliott Berry finally ended the 4:36 scoring drought with a jumper with 12:01 remaining on the clock.
The Highlanders still trailed by nine with 9:04 to go in the first, but they scored 12 of the next 13 points to take their first lead of the game since early in the period. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Anteaters closed the first on an 11-2 run to go up 38-31 heading into the locker room
UC Riverside turned up the defensive intensity in the second 20 minutes of play as the Anteaters missed 22 of 30 shots after the break including 11 of 14 from three-point range. The Highlanders also took much better care of the basketball totaling just five miscues over the final 34 minutes of action.
The key run for the Highlanders began with 11:41 to go in the game and UC Irvine sitting on double-digit advantage, 49-39. Daymond Cowlah's jumper cut the lead to eight, and Borum's two free throws made it a six-point game. Phil Martin cut the lead to five with a single free throw, and Borum's three-ball with 10:28 to go made it a two-point game.
The teams traded baskets on their next two possessions, but another Borum three put UC Riverside up 53-52 with 8:30 left on the clock. BJ Shearry's free throw and Kareem Nitoto's layup ended the UCR run pushing the Highlanders lead out to four.
One possession later, Kevin Bradshaw's layup gave UC Riverside a five-point lead, and that was the last basket the Highlanders would score on the night as they drained 16 of 20 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Borum led all scorers with 30 points becoming the first member of the Highlanders to reach the 30-point plateau since Kyle Austin scored 39 vs. Cal Poly on February 13, 2010. Borum's 12 of 12 night at the free throw line tied a UCR record. Nitoto finished with 13 points and Martin scored 10
Daman Starring paced the Anteaters with 19 points while Darren Moore added 13 and Mike Wilder chipped in with 11 off the bench.
The Highlanders take a break from Big West Conference play this Tuesday, January 4 as they host La Sierra at the Student Recreation Center at 7 pm PT.
